What to Wear For your Maternity Photos in Montreal
Because growing a human is a big deal—and you deserve to look and feel amazing doing it.
First off, mama, congratulations! Whether you're glowing, growing, or just trying to keep your eyes open past 8 PM, you're doing incredible. Your little one is almost here, but for now, this is YOUR MOMENT, enjoy it! A maternity session should be the reflection of who you are, and I want your outfit to reflect that. Let's dive into how to dress for it, ensuring you feel confident, comfortable, and authentically you.
👗 Dress to Impress (Yourself) for Your Maternity Photoshoot
You are the star of this show, so let's make sure you shine. Here are some outfit ideas to consider:
1. Flowing Maxi Dresses
Long, flowing dresses are a classic choice for maternity shoots. They accentuate your bump, add a touch of elegance to your photos and give us a lot of options to play with movement. Look for dresses with:
Empire waists: These sit just below the bust, allowing the fabric to drape beautifully over your belly.
Flowy fabrics: Comfort is key. Materials like gauze, soft cotton or polyester blends can provide both comfort and style.
Solid colours or subtle patterns: These keep the focus on you and your bump.
Here you have a nice example from Amazon.ca that will make you feel like the queen that you are, Boho dresses like this Cupshe one (I really love their dresses), which are not specifically intended as a maternity dress look stunning. THIS or THIS are other super cute but a little bit more casual option. Pinkblush has very stunning options, a bit more pricey though, but nothing you don’t deserve!
2. Form-Fitting Gowns
I don’t really recommend choosing a super tight to the body dress because they show every little bump and even underwear, and will make it more difficult for you to move and feel free during our session. BUT if you are feeling bold and want to use one of those shape-wear that suck everything nice and tidy, I would recommend going for something like THIS or THIS that has a little texture and would look great.
3. Casual Chic
Not into dresses? No problem! Consider:
Jeans or leggings paired with a flowy tunic or a tank top/a nice sports bra: This combo offers lots of comfort.
Maxi skirts with fitted tops: A great alternative that still emphasizes your bump.
Maternity rompers: Trendy and comfortable, perfect for a laid-back vibe like THIS one.
Remember, the most important thing is that you feel like yourself. If you're more comfortable in jeans and a tee, rock that look! Also trying going for fabrics like Most of the links I’m giving you are from Amazon, but there are tons of other stores with very nice options. Go wild, mama!
If you decide to do your photoshoot at home you can also take advantage and change outfits, if you like the sexy mama look, I always recommend wearing a nice set of underwear and either your partner’s shirt or a lace robe/kimono like THIS one.
🎨 Color Palette: Setting the Mood for Your Pregnancy Photos
Colors can set the tone for your photos. Here are some suggestions:
Neutrals: Whites, creams, beiges, and greys offer a timeless and clean look and if you are doing an outdoor session, you will definitely “pop” from the background (unless we are doing a winter session).
Earth tones: Sage green, rust, mustard, and terracotta can add warmth and depth and depending on the season, would look so beautiful against the natural backdrop.
Pastels: Soft pinks, blues, and lavenders create a dreamy, ethereal feel.
Avoid overly bright colours or busy patterns, as they can distract from the main focus—you and your beautiful bump.
👨👩👧👦 Coordinating with Your Family
If your partner or children are joining the shoot, coordination is key. Here are some tips:
Complement, don't match: Choose colors that go well together without being identical.
Stick to a color palette: Select 2-3 colors and have everyone wear outfits within that range.
Consider textures: Mixing different fabrics (like denim, knits, and cotton) can add visual interest.

🧥 Layers and Accessories
Adding layers and accessories can elevate your look:
Cardigans or shawls: Great for adding texture and warmth in the colder months (which are most of the months if you live in Montreal 🥲).
Hats: A wide-brimmed hat can add a stylish touch.
Jewelry: Simple necklaces or earrings can enhance your outfit without overpowering it.
Just remember, less is often more. The goal is to enhance, not distract. Try avoiding caps, big watches or anything that could outshine you (we definitely don’t want that).
🧘♀️ Comfort is Key
While style is important, comfort shouldn't be compromised. Here are some practical tips:
Wear comfortable shoes: Especially if we'll be walking or standing for extended periods. Barefoot is also very fun and gives a super natural vibe to the session.
Bring water and snacks: Keeping hydrated and energized is essential.
Consider the weather: Dress appropriately for the season and location. More breathable for summer days and long-sleeve for colder ones.
