What Are the Benefits of Outdoor, In-Home, and Studio Family Photoshoots in Montreal?
Each setting offers unique advantages that can enhance your family photoshoot experience:
Outdoor Family Photos: Natural warm light at golden hour (one hour before sunset) and scenic backdrops create vibrant and dynamic images. Parks, gardens, and urban settings provide diverse options for capturing candid moments.
In-Home Family Sessions: These sessions offer a comfortable and intimate environment, allowing families to relax and interact naturally. Personal touches in your home can add sentimental value to the photos. Think your favourite memorabilia, your sofa, that warm blanket you love so much to snuggle in and even your kids’ toys as the backdrop of your future images!
Studio Family Photos: Studios provide controlled lighting and backdrops, ensuring consistent quality. This setting is ideal for formal portraits or themed sessions. Which I don’t offer but can refer you to some very incredible photographer friends who do own studios and can do wonders there.
Understanding these benefits can help you choose the best setting for your family's needs.
Which Montreal Locations Are Best for Family Photos by Season?
Montreal boasts a variety of stunning locations that change with the seasons. Here are some top spots to consider:
Spring:
The Montreal Botanical Garden is a breathtaking choice, with blooming flowers and lush greenery.
For The Cherry Blossom Tree season I really recommend Westmount Park, is a very nice and centric option, but this is a location to shoot at during the week.
Or if you are into picking up your own flowers, Tulip Fields are just a gorgeous and very fun option for the kids!
SUMMER:
Maisonneuve or Angrignon Park offer vibrant landscapes open fields and picturesque ponds, perfect for outdoor family fun.
La Maison Lavande, offers a magically purple backdrop for some very fun photos during the Summer!
For a refreshing beach afternoon, I absolutely love taking my clients to Cap-Saint-Jacques. It’s the perfect place for some very summery photos!
Orchards like Le Verger du Flanc Nord offer another fun activity for the family to do together. The kids will be able to run, pick up their own apples, and it’s the perfect no-mess snack!
Boucherville Island is another hidden gem that I discover this past 2025 and fell completely in love with it. It has so many little places that create a magical atmosphere for a family photoshoot.
FALL:
Mount Royal Park showcases stunning fall foliage, providing a colourful backdrop for your photos.
I also really love Maisonneuve Park because of its openness, even if there’s lots of people, you can find an empty pocket to take beautiful photos!
As mentioned in the Summer category, Boucherville Island has these open field pockets which make Fall photos incredibly magical.
WINTER
Old Montreal transforms into a winter wonderland, with charming streets and festive decorations.
Selecting a location that complements the season can enhance the visual appeal of your family photos. Understanding how seasonal changes influence location appeal is crucial, with data often revealing patterns of visitor use in scenic areas.
Seasonal & Location Planning for Family Photoshoots Managing protected areas effectively requires information about patterns of visitor use, but these data are often limited. We explore how geotagged photos on Flickr, a popular photo-sharing social-media site, can generate hotspot maps and distribution models of temporal and spatial patterns of use in two mountain-protected areas of high conservation value.

How to Coordinate Family Outfits with Comfortable and Stylish Choices?
When coordinating outfits, consider the following tips:
Choose your outfit first, mama: You are the star of the show, you are the invisible camera woman documenting your family’s love story. This time is your moment to shine, so choose your outfit first (even if that means getting something new and flattering 😉😉) and then, plan the rest of the family’s outfits around it. And if you don’t know which colours make you shine, I recommend you ready my blog on Colour Analysis, it will change the way you shop and dress from now on!
Mix and Match: Please, please, please avoid the 2000’s “everyone wearing the exact same colours” and just choose colours that complement each other. You can use the colour wheel or head to Pinterest to get some cool ideas.
Incorporate Textures: Mixing textures, such as knits and denim, adds depth to your photos.
Balance Comfort and Style: Ensure that everyone feels comfortable in their outfits, as this will reflect in the photos. Uncomfy kids = grumpy kids, and we don’t want that!
Think seasonally and think layers: Layers add visual interest and allow for quick adjustments during the shoot. Think cardigans, vests, scarves, or jackets. They're especially handy for outdoor sessions where the weather can be unpredictable.
These strategies will help you create a harmonious look that enhances your family's personality.
What Are Specific Outfit Tips for Moms, Dads, Kids, and Pets?
Tailoring outfit choices for each family member can make a significant difference:
Moms: Flowy dresses or tailored outfits in solid colours work well. Avoid busy patterns like stripes or mini flowers that can distract from the family dynamic.
Dads: Casual button-ups or sweaters paired with chinos create a polished yet relaxed look.
Kids: Choose playful outfits that allow for movement, such as comfortable dresses or stylish shorts.
Pets: If including pets, consider coordinating their accessories, like bandanas or collars, with the family’s colour scheme.
These tailored tips ensure that each family member looks their best while maintaining a cohesive appearance.
How to Prepare Your Family, Kids, and Pets for a Smooth Montreal Photoshoot?
Preparation is key to a successful family photoshoot, especially when children and pets are involved. Engaging your family in the process can help everyone feel more comfortable and excited.
What Are the Best Strategies to Engage Kids and Keep Them Comfortable?
To keep kids engaged and comfortable during the shoot, consider these strategies:
Incorporate Games: Use playful activities to encourage natural interactions and smiles.
Timing: Schedule the shoot around nap times to ensure kids are well-rested and happy. My in-home photoshoots are around 9 or 10am (depending on the time of year) and outdoor photoshoots are around one hour before sunset ( 3pm for Winter and 7pm for Summer), so make sure these times work for your family when choosing your location!
Favourite Toys: Bring along a beloved toy to help them feel secure and relaxed.
These strategies can help create a fun atmosphere that results in genuine smiles and laughter.
Bring Snacks, Wipes, and a Backup Outfit
A few things you’ll definitely want to pack:
Non-messy snacks (think marshmallows or apple slices)
Water bottles
Baby wipes (always)
A backup outfit for each kid (just in case)
A small toy or comfort item (just if you don’t mind it appearing in the photos)
These small extras can be lifesavers if someone’s feeling cranky or if there’s a last-minute spill.
Focus on Connection, Not Posing
Don’t worry about where to put your hands or if everyone is looking at the camera, better if they don’t. My sessions are relaxed and playful. I will NEVER ask you to smile and you don’t need to make your kids smile either, you can detect a forced smiles from miles away, and I don’t want that for your photos. I’ll be your paparazzi the whole time while you do a fun activity!
The best images come when you’re simply enjoying your people.
How to Include Pets in Your Family Photoshoot Successfully?
Including pets in your family photos can add a special touch. Here are some tips for a smooth experience:
Familiar Items: Bring along your pet's favorite blanket or toy to help them feel at ease.
Manage Behaviour: Ensure your pet is well-exercised before the shoot to minimize restlessness.
Incorporate Pets Naturally: Allow pets to interact with family members, capturing candid moments that reflect your family dynamic.
These tips will help ensure that your furry family members are included in a way that feels natural and enjoyable.

A typical family photography session with me follows a structured yet flexible flow:

Introduction: I will introduce myself to the kids and make a couple of jokes so they start loosing up. I let them be them and show me their true personalities.
Shooting Process: The session will include a mix of prompted and candid shots, allowing for a variety of images.
Gallery Delivery Timeline: After the session, families can expect to receive their edited gallery within 2 to 3 weeks, showcasing the best moments captured during the shoot.
