What to Expect During an In-Home Newborn Session in Montreal
Because newborns don’t care about schedules, but I do, and I’ve got you covered.
So you’ve just had a baby (👏👏👏), congrats, mama! You’re probably running on love, adrenaline, and about three hours of sleep. Planning an in-home newborn session might sound like a lot, but don’t worry. My goal as your Montreal newborn photographer is to make this experience easy, cozy, and full of real moments (the ones that matter most, not Pinterest perfection).
Let’s go over a few simple tips to help you feel confident and relaxed for your in-home newborn session in Montreal.
When Is the Best Time for a Newborn Photoshoot?
Newborns are adorably unpredictable, which is why I always keep your session super flexible. The sweet spot for in-home newborn sessions is usually when your baby is between 7 and 21 days old. At this stage, they’re still sleepy, snuggly, and easy to comfort, ideal for those dreamy, natural photos.
But don’t stress about timing. If your baby is a little older, that’s totally fine! What matters most is that you feel ready and comfortable. And if you’re still living in a robe with messy hair, you are absolutely in good company. 💕
How to Prepare for Your In-Home Newborn Session
You don’t need to deep clean your entire house (promise!). We’re capturing your family’s genuine story, not a magazine spread.
Here’s what’s helpful to have on hand:
A few soft, neutral swaddles or wraps. (If you don’t have any, I’ll bring some!)
A simple onesie or footed sleeper in natural tones.
Diapers, wipes, burp cloths, and a pacifier (if baby uses one).
A warm space, around 75°F (24°C) keeps baby cozy and happy.
Any sentimental items, think handmade blankets or family heirlooms, for that extra personal touch.
I also have a small but super cute newborn client closet which you can have access to as soon as you book your session. I’ll send you a document where you can select which items you want me to bring to the photoshoot, clean and ready for baby!
Lighting: The Secret Ingredient
Natural light is the heart of every in-home session. I’ll look for the best-lit areas in your home, usually near big windows in your bedroom, nursery or living room. Just open the blinds and let that morning light shine in (our sessions usually start around 9–10 a.m. for that soft, golden feel).
If it’s cloudy or dim? No worries, I’ll get creative to make sure the images still glow beautifully.
If your main bedroom or nursery get the best light during the afternoon instead, please do tell me when you are booking your session and we can accommodate it.
“Tidy Enough” Is Perfect
No need for a spotless house. A quick tidy of the rooms we’ll use (remove cups, fold a blanket, clear nightstands) is more than enough. A made bed, a cozy throw, or a few pillows can make wonders in photos.
And if the laundry basket makes an appearance, let’s call it authentic motherhood aesthetic. 😉
What to Wear for Your In-Home Newborn Photoshoot
Think soft, simple, and comfy. Imagine what you’d wear to brunch with your best friends, the ones who love you no matter what’s on your shirt. Flowy dresses, knits, leggings, or cozy tops are all perfect.
Avoid bold prints or bright neon colours, neutral, pastel, and earthy tones photograph beautifully indoors. For partners or siblings, aim for coordinating pieces rather than matching ones. Bare feet are perfect and comfortable too!.

How to Keep Baby Happy During the Session
Your baby sets the pace, and that’s exactly how it should be. We’ll pause for feedings, diaper changes, snuggles, or breaks whenever needed. The magic often happens between the moments.
If you are breastfeeding and want to capture that beautiful and unique connection, but you are not quite sure yet, I invite you to read my blog about How to Feel Confident Breastfeeding During Photos.
Final Thoughts: Real Life Is Beautiful
Your in-home newborn session is about connection, not perfection. It’s about that soft sigh when they fall asleep on your chest, those little fingers wrapped around yours, and the way your partner looks at you holding the tiny human you made together.
It’s messy, magical, emotional, and I’m honoured to capture it all.
Got questions? Need help picking outfits or prepping your space? You’re never bothering me. Send me a message and I’ll help you feel ready (or at least a little less like a hot-mess-in-a-diaper-haze).
