Tips For a Relaxed In-home Newborn Photoshoot in Montreal

Because newborns don’t care about schedules, but I do—and I’ve got you covered.

So you’ve just had a baby (👏👏👏)—congrats, mama! You’re probably running on love, adrenaline, and about 3 hours of sleep. Planning an in-home newborn session might sound like a lot, but don’t worry. My goal is to make this easy, relaxed, and full of snuggles (the real kind, not the Pinterest-perfect kind).

Let’s go over a few simple tips to help you feel prepared and at ease for your cozy in-home session.

🕰️ Timing is Everything (But Also, Don’t Stress)

Newborns are adorably unpredictable, which is why I always keep your session super flexible. That said, the sweet spot for in-home sessions is usually when your baby is between 7 and 21 days old. At this stage, they’re still sleepy and snuggly, and you’re hopefully finding your groove at home.

Don’t worry if your baby is a little older—what matters most is that you are ready. And if you're still living in a robe and haven't brushed your hair in days, you're in great company.

🧺 What to Have Ready (Spoiler: Not Much)

No need to deep clean your entire house. We’re not shooting a magazine spread—we’re capturing your real life, and it’s beautiful just the way it is.

Here’s what’s actually helpful to have on hand:

  • A few swaddle blankets or wraps in neutral or soft tones. If you don’t own any just let me know, I’ve got you covered, mama!

  • A simple onesie or footed sleeper (bonus points for neutral colours or soft textures).

  • Burp cloths, diapers, wipes, and a pacifier if your baby uses one.

  • A warm-ish space for baby (around 75°F/24°C works best to keep them comfy since some of the photos will be of baby tots naked).

If there are any sentimental items—like a handmade blanket or family heirloom—you’re welcome to include those too!

💡 Let’s Talk Light

Natural light is the name of the game. I’ll be looking for the best-lit spots in your home—typically near big windows or in the master bedroom/living room. No need to worry about staging anything. Just open the blinds and let the sunshine in, and because in-home sessions are in the morning around 9 or 10am, we’ll definitely have nice lighting (unless is cloudy and gloomy, and I’ll have to get creative 😅).

If the light is soft and cozy in your baby’s nursery, amazing. If it’s better in your bedroom, we’ll go there instead. I’ll guide you every step of the way.

🛏️ Tidy-ish is Good Enough

You do not need to Marie Kondo your house. Just a quick tidy of the spaces we’ll use (like removing cups from nightstands or clearing clutter from the couch) is more than enough. A made bed, a soft throw, or a cozy pillow can go a long way in making things photo-ready.

And if a laundry basket makes a surprise cameo? We’ll call it “authentic motherhood aesthetic.”

👗 What Should You Wear?

Think soft, neutral, and comfy—just like you would for a relaxed brunch with your besties (the ones who love you no matter what’s on your shirt). Flowy dresses, soft knits, leggings and a cozy top—yes to all of it.

Avoid loud prints or neon colours. Neutrals, pastels, and earthy tones photograph beautifully indoors.

For partners and older siblings, follow the same vibe: comfy, clean, and coordinating (but not matching). Keep it simple and soft. Bare feet are perfect, and bonus—they’re comfy too.

🍼 Feed, Cuddle, Pause, Repeat

Your baby runs the show—and that’s exactly how it should be. We’ll take breaks for feedings, diaper changes, snuggles, or just a moment to breathe. No rush, no pressure. I work on baby time (and just to reassure you, those in-between moments make for the most perfect photos).

Pro tip: try to feed baby right before I arrive (or when I arrive) so they’re full, sleepy, and ready for cuddles.

🧘‍♀️ Final Thoughts: Keep It Real

Your in-home newborn session is about connection, not perfection. It’s about that soft sigh when they fall asleep on your chest, those little fingers wrapped around yours, and the way your partner looks at you holding the tiny human you made together.

It’s messy, magical, emotional—and I’m honoured to capture it all.

Got questions? Need help picking outfits or prepping your space? You’re never bothering me. Send me a message and I’ll help you feel ready (or at least a little less like a hot-mess-in-a-diaper-haze).
