The Magic of Golden Hour Photography

When I was doing some research to write this blog I searched for the meaning of Golden Hour and this is what the Oxford Dictionary says “The period of time just after sunrise or just before sunset when the light is infused with red and gold tones.” And yes, that’s exactly what photos look like when taken at golden hour, infused by warmth and magic!

I am the biggest fan of golden hour photography, in fact I have always been a lover of sunsets, it is my favourite time of the day (light-wise), it is so romantic and it makes the sessions feel so intimate and warm, and I really can’t rave enough about this time of day. And if you've ever had a photo taken during this time, you already know it feels like nature is showing off just for you.

So, What Is Golden Hour?

Golden hour isn’t exactly 60 minutes on the dot — it varies depending on the time of year and your location — but generally, it’s the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. The sun is lower in the sky, casting longer, softer shadows and a warmer hue over everything.

No harsh lighting. No squinting. Just pure, flattering light that’s gentle on your skin and dreamy in your photos.

Why It’s a Photographer’s Favorite

  • Flattering, Soft Light: Harsh midday sun can create strong shadows and highlights, but golden hour light wraps around your face gently, highlighting your features in the most natural way.

  • Gorgeous Skin Tones: That warm glow enhances all skin tones, giving everyone a radiant, healthy look — no filters needed.

  • Magical Backgrounds: Everything looks like it belongs in a fairytale. That glow peeking through the trees or anything in the background is just magic!

  • Emotionally Evocative: There’s just something felt during golden hour — a sense of calm, connection, and beauty. It adds a subtle layer of emotion to every photo.

When Golden Hour Meets Real Life

As a mom of two and a photographer who’s worked with hundreds of families, I get it — the timing doesn’t always feel ideal. Maybe golden hour happens right during your toddler’s bedtime, or you’re worried about rushing after work.

But trust me, it’s always worth it.

Kids might be a bit tired and partners might be camera-shy, but when the session starts, I’ll make the kids run, laugh, get tickled and you will all feel at ease, have lots of fun and the result will be just ✨magical✨

Tips for a Perfect Golden Hour Session

  • Plan Ahead: Golden hour waits for no one! Be ready 15–20 minutes before it starts so we don’t miss those golden moments.

  • Dress for the Glow: Earthy tones, creams, and soft pastels photograph beautifully in golden hour light. Think flowy dresses, cozy knits, and bare feet in the grass.

  • Let Go of Perfection: Golden hour sessions are about connection, not perfection. Come as you are. Bring snacks, a blanket, maybe even bubbles for the kids. We’ll make magic with the real stuff.
